Artist Statement
BACKI create monochromatic paintings using a limited color palette of white, black and occasionally red while putting my focus entirely on shape, line and texture. I use abstract imagery in a grid-like composition, of a geometric nature using repetition and overlapping. I use a variety of techniques and media in a non-traditional way because I want to push the limits of a medium and expand their possibilities to a point where the medium is not easily recognizable any more. In my work, I explore the concept of duality, or the unity of opposites, as it defines the existence of a situation depending on the co-existence of its opposite. I stretch this fluid concept by focusing on either opposite while considering both as a possibility at the same time. Concepts such as the permanent and the temporal, the everlasting and the ephemeral, the real and the perceived are some of the themes I explore. Since last year my work shifted to look more industrial-like. There are certain aspects of this painting series that look like wire connections, stitching, or certain attachments that have a machine-like resemblance. Working within the concept of unity of opposites, the real and the perceived, my works are a reflection of this original concept by the fact of having a condition of machine-like objects while at the same time not being real objects at all. In a way these objects are my perception and depiction of scientific and technological ideas.
